The Smellas are about to share our summer scent secrets to keep you smelling fresh, alive, and ready to make the most out of the season.
"The Bois of Summer" by Mike Devine
My favorite summer go-to fragrances that I reach for are: Issey Miyake Summer 2009 Edition, D&G Light Blue Pour Homme, and Le Dandy from D'Orsay. I like to wear the Issey for its watery citrus which keeps me feeling refreshed on those hot humid days. Light Blue is amazing for those 75ºF temps during warmer months - this scent always puts me into a great mood and makes me feel elegant as well. Le Dandy is my new favorite that I enjoy wearing into the evening. It has amazing longevity and projection which is very important for me in the summer.
For the summer day, Coney Island by Bond No. 9 is usually my choice. It represents everything the summer season is about -- cheery, bright fun! I also love Aqua Universalis Forte by Maison Francis Kurkdjian which is clean, fresh and floral goodness. For summer nights, it's all about Creed’s Virgin Island Water. Piña Coladas are usually my drink of choice come nighttime and nothing else complements that more than Creed’s VIW. Another good one for summer nights is Prelude To Love By Kilian, which is citrusy and floral, bright and sexy.
The summertime is my favorite time to play! Several fragrances that are in high rotation during the heat include: L'Humaniste by Frapin and Bergamote 22 by Le Labo!!! Both of these scents provide a fresh, energizing cocktail-vibe that helps me deal with the heat and smell awesome!!! Get your noses on these outstanding scents that will surely attract compliments
The summer is the season of Creed. My top 3 for the daytime are 1) Creed Jardin d' Amalfi, a clean, fresh, citrus and floral scent which, in combination with a fruitiness, incorporates and symbolizes what summertime is. 2) Creed Millesime Imperial, a watermelon (not listed as a note) based fragrance with a touch of saltiness and freshness which will have heads turning. 3) Amyris Homme by Maison Francis Kurkdjian, a balmy, slightly woody, and a freshly sweet smell that will make you project like a Pina Colada.
My top 3 for the nighttime during the Summer are 1) Creed Aventus, a pineapple-based fragrance that leads to a fresh smoky scent that will garner compliments every time. 2) Creed Spice and Wood -- well, the name is self-explanatory. It smells like spice and wood, but it works! It guarantees compliments left and right. 3) Le Labo Baie Rose 26, a freshly and musky rose scent with a hint of added spices that will have people asking you all the time: what are you wearing?
My number one 2013 summer scent is by Biehl Parfumkunstwerke's P01. Perfumer Patricia Choux uses green notes blended with davana to create the sweet earthy smell of cut grass. When used in combination with the exotic aroma of mango, you get a perfectly-balanced, original-smelling summer scent. Patricia told me she wanted to capture wet grass and just the right touch of a mango, making sure it did not become overly sweet. I say: bravo, well done and certainly this summer's number one.

During the summer months, I prefer to wear lighter scents. One that I've become fond of is Odin 06. While it's not new, it gets the job done well. The blood orange in the opening notes really gives the scent a zesty lift that lasts for at least 3-5 hrs. After that it mellows a bit but never fades. It has excellent staying power.
Summer is the season for light and fresh scents, which, for this GoodSmella are not the scents I usually gravitate towards. I enjoy the dark, heavy scents that are more appropriate for cooler weather; therefore, I need to improvise a bit during the summer months. My favorite go-to scent for the summer is Gaiac by the house of M. Micallef. Gaiac is centered around a rich vanilla/gaiacwood combination rounded with a hint of cloves. Normally, these three notes are quite heavy and overpowering, but the addition of zesty bergamot, airy jasmine and earthy vetiver dramatically lighten these heavy-hitting components, creating a fall/winter type fragrance that performs beautifully in the heat of summer. Gaiac is the perfect year-round scent, which will always be in the top of this GoodSmella's summertime rotation.
I've always been one to gravitate toward the freshies in the hot weather, but I think I've taken a page out of Rich's rulebook (make that a 'no-rules book') and have been bringing out some heavy hitters with nontraditional notes for this time of year. It all started when I flipped for Amouage's new addition to the Library Collection: Opus VII. The dark greenness takes on a deep forest feeling, a walk in the woods as night falls. Rich's hype-train pulled me on board with his newest favs: Bois 1920 Vento nel Vento and Parfum De Marley's Herod. The summer heat will bring out every facet of these complex and intriguing fragrances. Break the rules!

I really enjoy Bond No 9's beach scents in the summer, specifically Montauk and Fire Island. Some of my other summer go-to's are Yosh's Ginger Ciao, Acqua di Parma Colonia Essenza, i Profumi di Firenze Frangipane e Cocco, Heeley's Sel Marin and Menthe Fraiche. I also have a feeling that Heeley's upcoming Coccobello is going to be a FANTASTIC summer frag. Oh, and Robert Piguet Fracas. Yup I said, Fracas!
